Doodle 640 – Day 2 Driving

Doodle 640 - Day 2 Driving

Today we had a lot less miles to get though before getting home, but we planned on stopping in Mount Pleasant IA to see the Printer’s Hall my dad has been working so hard on the last few years at the Old Threshers fair grounds.  I was amazed at all the great presses and other equipment they have been able to amass from donations, and the amazing things that they get to do with them each year.  We also got the check out all the steam engines that had been parked and cleaned out for the winter.  The sun never really came out today and the heater in my truck couldn’t quite keep up with the draftiness that she’s developed with age.  It was a pretty cold drive preety much the whole day.

More Stats:

  • Leg 1: Peoria IL to Mount Pleasant IA (126 Miles)
  • Leg 2: Mount Pleasant to Amana IA (68 Miles, 13.42 Gallons, 14.45 MPG)
  • Leg 3: Amana IA to Home (118 Miles)

She made it all the way and deserves a good rest.  That’s my girl!

Doodle 639 - Day 1 Driving

So we started off this morning from central Maryland and got all the way to Peoria IL before deciding to call it quits for the day.  The first two hours were a little rough on the old girl with the combination of having a substantial amount of gasoline of questionable age/quality still in the tank and climbing quite a few big hills in northern Maryland and Pennsylvania.  But after the first few hours, she really seemed to work out all the kinks and found a sweet spot running around 65-70 down the highway.  Being a nerd, here’s some stats extrapolated from our gas receipts and the map above.

  • Leg 1: Maryland to Breezewood PA (123 miles, 8.157 Gallons, 15.08 MPG)
  • Leg 2: Breezewood to Cambridge OH (209 Miles, 10.251 Gallons, 20.39 MPG)
  • Leg 3: Cambridge to Brownsville IN (274 Miles, 15.8 Gallons, 17.34 MPG)
  • Leg 4: Brownsville to Peoria IL (194 Miles, 10.1 Gallons, 19.21 MPG)

Not bad for a 25 year old, carbeurated V-8!

Doodle 638 – License Plate Light

Doodle 638 - License Plate Light

Essentially the last part that I needed for the truck is a rear license plate light for the bumper I just put on.  Though I fondly remember the days when I could walk into any car parts store in the midwest and get anything I needed for a mid 80’s Chevy pickup, that’s certainly not the case on the present day East Coast.  After trying multiple parts stores, and driving all over the place, we finally settled on something that would have to work, with a little MacGyvering on our part.

Doodle 637 - Tipi

My dad was playing with the boys out in the woods today while I was putting some more finishing touches on the truck.  I guys ones of their friends was putting a few sticks together and dad kind of ran with it.  By the time it started getting dark he’d helped them build a really awesome tee pee all out of sticks they found woven together.

Doodle 636 - Engraving and Printing

Today the boys had school so  I was able to take my dad into Washington DC to do some sightseeing.  We decided to head to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and take the tour to see them print US currency.  A lot of the process seemed familiar growing up watching my dad work on his own small presses and going with him a few times to some of the huge magazine and book printing places he’d worked at.  It was still really cool to see the Bureau’s process and visit the gift shop where they have an old Intaglio press set up.  I think my dad really enjoyed it.  We also stopped into the American History Museum and the WWI memorial before we headed home for the day.

My dad flew in today to spend the weekend and then embark on the great roadtrip home with me next week.  Tonight we watched the Helvetica documentary on Netflix as my dad is a hobby letterpress printer.  It’s funny how much power typography can have.

Doodle 634 - School Camping Trip

It’s that time of year again, time for the annual school overnight camping trip.  I get to lead the same “Trust Me/Team Building” activity I did last year, so I get to see all the different groups instead of sticking with just one.  Hopefully our cabin full of young gentlemen will go to bed a little earlier this year.

Doodle 631 - Random Parts

Tonight I mounted the bumper on the truck, changed out a bunch of dead bulbs, switched the fuel and air filters, and did some carburetor tuning.  Now I just need to find some license plate lights for that new bumper.

Doodle 630 - Newish Bumper

In about a week I’m going to be driving my ’86 Chevy pickup back home to my dad’s farm, so I really need to get it road worthy over the next week.  First and foremost was getting a rear bumper on it.  My old bumper lost a tug-of-war with a extremely well rooted bush a few years back.  My friend Tim headed out with me to the local “parts garden” (junk yard) and we found a willing donor.  $46 dollars later and I’ve got me a bumper plus a free bumper sticker.

Doodle 629 – Nametag Builder

Doodle 629 - Nametag Builder

I decided to go the same route I did for the reading certificates and make a jQuery web page for my son’s teacher to build all the nametags for this years camping trip.  All she had to do was figure out the kids names, groups (animal picture), cabin info, table number, and job in a spreadsheet.  Then, she can save the spreadsheet as a comma separated file, and paste the whole thing in this web page.  The page sets up four nametags per sheet and hides the controls when you print it.

Doodle 628 – Bird Character

Doodle 628 - Bird Character

The other thing that my son’s teacher request for this years name tags was an additional animal character to add to the ones I did last year.  So my wife suggested that I draw a bird.

Doodle 627 - Nature Badge

Our sons annual class camping field trip is coming up and his teacher asked me to make a few new additions to the name tags from last year.  The first was an activity leader badge, so this is what I came up with.
